M-PESA Foundation, in collaboration with Zuri Health and Lion Sight First Eye Hospital, has provided free medical services to over 3,000 residents in Vihiga County through a large-scale medical camp at Gisambai Primary School. The initiative is part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility in underserved regions across Kenya.
The medical camp offered a range of essential health services, including:
- Women’s Health Services: Breast cancer screening, prenatal and antenatal checkups, and child clinics.
- Eye Care Consultations: Eye checkups, diagnosis, and prescription services.
- Dental Screenings: Free dental checkups and oral health education.
- General Medical Consultations: Comprehensive health assessments and treatment for various conditions.
As part of its maternal health support, the M-PESA Foundation also distributed 100 Mama Packs to new and expectant mothers at Vihiga County Referral Hospital. This initiative aims to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes by providing essential supplies for safe deliveries.
A unique feature of these medical camps is the integration of technology to ensure follow-up care for patients. Through SMS and WhatsApp, patients can consult with doctors for up to six months after receiving treatment. This innovative approach ensures continued medical support and enhances patient recovery outcomes.
Beyond the medical camp, the M-PESA Foundation has invested in long-term healthcare improvements in the county. Recently, it broke ground on a KES 60 million maternity unit at Vihiga Referral Hospital, a facility set to significantly enhance maternal and child health services in the region.
M-PESA Foundation’s impact in Vihiga extends beyond healthcare. The Foundation has also contributed to the education sector by enhancing school infrastructure. Some recent initiatives include:
- Renovation of school facilities at Gamoi Primary School.
- Groundbreaking of new learning infrastructure at Chekomebero Special School.
Since launching its medical camp program in 2023, M-PESA Foundation has held 39 medical camps in 35 counties, including Nairobi, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Nakuru, Kwale, Siaya, Migori, Kajiado, and Kisii. These camps have provided thousands of Kenyans with critical healthcare services at no cost.
