WPP Scangroup Plc, one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s leading marketing and communications networks, has announced a leadership transition following the end of contract for Chief Executive Officer Patricia Ithau, who will be stepping down from her role.
In a public announcement issued by the company’s Board of Directors, Ithau’s exit was described as the natural conclusion of her contract. The Board expressed deep appreciation for her contributions, citing her pivotal role in guiding the company through a critical transformation period within the fast-evolving marketing and media landscape.
“Patricia has been a passionate and dedicated leader, offering invaluable insights and steady leadership during a pivotal chapter in the company’s journey,” the statement read. “We wish her the very best in her future endeavors.”
To ensure a smooth transition, Ms. Ithau will continue to work closely with the leadership team during the handover period.
The Board has announced that Ms. Miriam Kaggwa, the current Chief Operating Officer (COO), will assume interim operational leadership responsibilities during the transition.
Kaggwa is a seasoned finance and business executive with deep experience in emerging markets. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, a degree in Chemistry from Imperial College London, and an MBA from the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University, USA.
She will work in close collaboration with Vikas Mehta, CEO of Ogilvy Africa — WPP Scangroup’s largest agency — and the broader management team, to drive the company’s strategic goals and ensure seamless operations.
The company confirmed that a formal search process for a new CEO is underway, as Scangroup positions itself for sustained growth in Africa’s dynamic marketing sector.
“Scangroup remains on a solid footing with a clear strategic focus and a strong leadership team committed to delivering long-term value for clients, shareholders, and stakeholders,” said Board Chairman Richard Omwela.
Ms. Ithau was appointed CEO in 2022 at a time when WPP Scangroup was navigating a complex post-COVID business environment and undertaking structural realignment to refocus its core offerings. Her leadership focused on digital transformation, operational efficiency, and rebuilding investor confidence after a turbulent leadership period in prior years.
Her exit comes at a time when Scangroup is poised to capitalize on rising demand for integrated marketing, data-driven communication, and digital-first advertising solutions across East and Sub-Saharan Africa.
WPP Scangroup Plc is a Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed firm and the largest marketing and communications group in Sub-Saharan Africa. The company owns and operates several leading agencies under the WPP global network, including Ogilvy Africa, Squad Digital, SCANAD, and GroupM, among others.
