Safaricom, in partnership with Huawei, has unveiled VybCall — Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service — a next-generation evolution of the popular Skiza platform launched nearly two decades ago.
The new service introduces short-form videos that replace traditional ringback tones, allowing Safaricom customers to entertain or engage callers with curated video clips while they wait for a call to be answered. The rollout positions Kenya as the first African country to launch a VRBT service, highlighting Safaricom’s ongoing leadership in mobile innovation and digital lifestyle experiences.
Transforming Everyday Calls Into Visual Experiences
According to Safaricom Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO) James Maitai, VybCall is designed to give customers more creative control over their communication experience.
“At Safaricom, we are constantly exploring new ways to give our customers choice and control through targeted experiences,” said Maitai.
“The launch of Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone service is one way we are transforming daily moments creatively, buttressing our commitment to innovation.”
Customers can activate VybCall by dialling *860# on compatible devices or visiting vybcall.safaricom.com via the Safaricom App.
Supported Devices and Rollout Plan
The VybCall service is currently available on the Safaricom Neon device range, select Samsung and Oppo smartphones, and Xiaomi’s Redmi A series, with support for Vivo devices expected in Q2 2026.
The feature leverages Huawei’s advanced video and network optimization technology to ensure seamless streaming and high-quality playback during call connection periods.
Huawei: Boosting Local Innovation and Digital Creativity
Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao noted that the collaboration demonstrates the potential for technology partnerships to enhance customer experience and drive digital innovation in Africa.
“VybCall will help the amazing creatives in Kenya, which is just one of the many ways Huawei works with our partners to develop innovative technologies that improve customer experience and drive economic growth,” said Gao.
The move is also expected to unlock new monetisation opportunities for Kenyan content creators, musicians, and brands, by allowing them to customize caller experiences with branded or entertainment-based short videos.
Evolving from Skiza to VybCall
Since its introduction nearly 20 years ago, Skiza Tunes has been one of Safaricom’s most successful content platforms, enabling customers to share favourite songs with callers. With the rise of short-form video content on social media and streaming platforms, VybCall represents Safaricom’s latest effort to stay in step with shifting digital consumption habits.
The company says the VRBT feature will not only enhance user engagement but also give businesses and marketers a new medium to turn caller waiting time into an advertising opportunity.
“The launch of VRBT highlights Safaricom’s ongoing investment in enhancing customer touchpoints while advancing Kenya’s digital experiences,” the company noted in a statement.
