Mabati Rolling Mills Ltd (MRM), through the Safal MRM Foundation, has officially handed over a newly constructed classroom block at Nyanjoro Primary School in Nyahururu, marking another milestone in the company’s education-focused community investment initiatives.

The new classrooms are expected to significantly improve learning conditions for pupils and teachers by providing a safe, dignified, and conducive environment that supports concentration, participation, and improved educational outcomes.

From roofing repairs to full classroom construction

Speaking during the handover ceremony, MRM Chief Executive Officer Albert Sigei explained that the project scope was expanded after an initial site assessment revealed serious safety concerns.

“Originally approached to support roofing repairs, a site assessment revealed that the existing structures could not safely support new roofing,” Sigei said. “Prioritizing learner safety and long-term impact, we expanded our intervention from repair to the construction of a complete, modern classroom block.”

The decision reflects MRM’s emphasis on sustainable, long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes, particularly where learner safety is concerned.

Education as a pillar of community investment

The project was implemented through the Safal MRM Foundation, which leads the company’s social investment initiatives with a focus on sustainable community empowerment aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

MRM noted that the Nyahururu school project represents a direct investment in the communities where the company lives and operates, reinforcing its belief that corporate responsibility extends beyond manufacturing.

“This initiative goes beyond philanthropy,” the company said. “It reflects our responsibility to actively build stronger, more resilient communities.”

Guided by its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) pillars of Education and Shelter, MRM continues to invest in both physical infrastructure and human capital, supporting secure learning spaces while laying foundations for future economic and social progress.

Contribution to SDG 4

Sigei added that the classroom project directly supports SDG 4, which focuses on inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.

“This project aligns with MRM’s Education Pillar and contributes directly to SDG 4,” he said. “It addresses the critical infrastructure challenges that once hindered daily learning for pupils and teachers.”

By improving school infrastructure, the company aims to remove barriers that limit access to quality education, particularly in public primary schools facing overcrowding and ageing facilities.

Community and education sector support

The Headteacher of Nyanjoro Primary School expressed appreciation for the support, noting the transformative impact the new classrooms will have on teaching and learning.

“We are deeply thankful to MRM and the Safal MRM Foundation for this transformative support,” the Headteacher said. “These new classrooms will enable effective teaching and provide secure, engaging spaces for our students and staff.”

The handover ceremony was attended by the Sub-County Education Officer, education authorities, community development partners, NGOs, parents, and local leaders. Attendees commended MRM for its role in improving learning environments and strengthening school communities in the region.
