Stanbic Bank Kenya Limited has announced the appointment of Abraham Ongenge as the Acting Chief Executive Officer, effective March 1, 2026, subject to regulatory approval by the Central Bank of Kenya.
Ongenge currently serves as the Head of Personal and Private Banking at the lender, a role he has held since November 2023.
The appointment places him at the helm of one of Kenya’s leading commercial banks during a period of continued growth and transformation in the banking sector.
Long Career Within Standard Bank Group
Before taking on the acting CEO role, Ongenge built a career spanning several senior roles within the Standard Bank Group, the parent company of Stanbic Bank.
He began his career as a Financial Accountant, later advancing to the role of Chief Finance and Value Officer.
During his time with the group, Ongenge held various positions across Kenya, South Africa and Uganda, gaining experience in different banking environments within the region.
In addition to his roles within the group, he has also served as a Finance Director in a local bank, further expanding his leadership experience in the financial services sector.
Academic and Professional Qualifications
Ongenge holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Nairobi, graduating with First Class Honours.
He is a Certified Public Accountant in Kenya (CPA(K)) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK). He also holds the designation of Certified Public Accountant in Uganda (CPA(U)).
In addition to his professional qualifications, Ongenge has undertaken executive education programmes to strengthen his leadership and digital strategy skills.

- The Advanced Management Program at Strathmore Business School
- Executive training at IESE Business School in Spain
Regulatory Approval Pending
The appointment remains subject to approval by the Central Bank of Kenya, which regulates and licenses commercial banks operating in the country.
