Kevin Getobai, founder of Ololo Farm and Lodge, has been honored as a 2024 SDG Pioneer by the United Nations Global Compact for his innovative contributions to sustainable agriculture. Getobai received the prestigious award during the UN General Assembly in New York, becoming the third Kenyan to win this global recognition since 2019.
Getobai was awarded in the Africa Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Category for pioneering sustainable farming techniques aimed at addressing both food security and environmental sustainability. His work includes utilizing Black Soldier Flies (BSF) for organic waste composting, transforming waste into valuable organic manure and animal protein. This initiative aligns with global targets to achieve Net Zero by 2030, illustrating how SMEs can lead in sustainable agricultural practices.
The SDG Pioneers programme celebrates professionals globally who are advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the implementation of the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. These individuals drive innovation by developing new technologies, business models, and initiatives that contribute to achieving the SDGs by 2030. Getobai was among 12 winners selected from regions including Western Europe, North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa.
Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, praised the winners, stating, “These SDG Pioneers are leading the way in showing that business can be a force for good. Their innovative approaches and commitment to sustainability inspire the private sector to contribute to achieving the SDGs.”
Judy Njino, Executive Director of Global Compact Network Kenya, congratulated Getobai for his remarkable achievement, highlighting his role in showcasing Kenya’s commitment to sustainable development.
