KMTC Karen

Overview of KMTC Karen Campus

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Karen Campus is a premier institution renowned for its exceptional training in Nutrition and Dietetics, supported by state-of-the-art facilities, a picturesque location, and a legacy of excellence in medical education. Located in the serene, high-end residential area of Karen, about 22 kilometers from Nairobi City, the campus spans 12.5 acres of land. Its proximity to the slopes of Ngong Hills provides a picturesque learning environment.

Established in 1965 by the Danish Government, KMTC Karen Campus was named in honor of Karen Blixen, a renowned Danish author and coffee farmer who lived in Kenya. Blixen is best known for her literary works under pen names like Isak Dinesen and Tania Blixen, as well as her memoir “Out of Africa,” which details her experiences in the region and reflects her enduring connection to the land. The campus has since evolved into a center of excellence in medical training, maintaining a strong legacy of quality education and collaboration with both Kenyan and international stakeholders.

Historical Background

Karen Blixen’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the campus’s history. Between 1912 and 1931, Blixen lived on the land that now hosts the Karen Blixen Museum and part of the KMTC Karen Campus. During her time in Kenya, Blixen contributed to local education by teaching African girls hygiene, food preparation, and basic first aid.

The Danish Government’s establishment of KMTC Karen Campus in 1965 was a continuation of this legacy. Initially, the campus operated from Karen House, which later became the Karen Blixen Museum. In 1966, the campus was officially inaugurated by Kenya’s then-Vice President, Hon. Joseph Murumbi. The Danish Government also collaborated with Kenyan authorities to build and staff the campus with experts in nutrition, hygiene, and gardening. The administration was handed over to the Kenyan Ministry of Health in 1971, with the first African principal, Rosemary Moraa, taking charge in 1976.
