Equity Leaders Program: 113 Scholars Secure Scholarships to Prestigious Global Universities, Worth Over Ksh2.7 Billion

In a significant milestone, 113 scholars from the Equity Leadership Program (ELP) have secured admissions and scholarships to 71 prestigious universities across 22 countries. The scholarships, valued at over Ksh2.7 billion (USD 21.5 million), will cover the full duration of their undergraduate studies.

The scholars, drawn from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), were commissioned by Equity Group Foundation (EGF) Executive Chairman Dr. James Mwangi during a ceremony that also marked the start of their journey to global academic excellence.

In addition to their scholarships, each scholar will receive an airlift token of Ksh200,000 to support their transition to their respective universities. These students have been admitted to leading institutions across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Empowering the Next Generation of African Leaders

The Equity Leaders Program, an initiative of the Equity Group Foundation, provides top-performing students with academic and leadership training. This year’s cohort underwent a comprehensive two-month College Counselling program, which included expert guidance on essay writing, university selection, and exam preparation. Additionally, a week-long bootcamp equipped the scholars with the skills necessary to navigate university life and thrive as global scholars.

Dr. Mwangi challenged the students to be agents of change, urging them to leverage the knowledge, values, and skills they will acquire to address Africa’s development challenges. “As you embark on this journey, remember to stay adaptable and embrace every challenge with integrity. Embrace the journey ahead and be open to different cultures and perspectives, and let your unique qualities shine,” he said.

The scholars’ destinations include Ivy League universities such as Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia, as well as other prestigious institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Toronto.

Driving Africa’s Socio-Economic Growth

Dr. Mwangi emphasized the crucial role these scholars will play in driving Africa’s socio-economic growth, particularly within the framework of the Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP). “By establishing your networks and contributing ideas and solutions on how to bolster Africa’s economic potential, you can grow trade and investment on the continent, expand markets, and accelerate technology adoption to elevate our potential,” he stated.

He also highlighted the importance of mentorship, encouraging the scholars to give back to their communities and inspire future generations. “Your journey is not just about personal success; it’s about illuminating the paths for others. Build strong connections, share your knowledge, and give back to your community,” Dr. Mwangi advised.

Success Stories from the Program

Among the scholars is Garang Makech Kuol, who is joining Bowdoin University in the USA to study Computer Science. Garang, who grew up in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, shared how the support from Equity during his ELP journey transformed his life. “The support network I found within Equity has been instrumental to my success. It’s incredible to think about how my life has transformed from the adversity of a refugee camp to securing my place at a world-class university,” he said.

Another standout scholar, Evelyn Wahu Gathara, who will be attending Harvard University to study Computer Science, shared her journey of academic excellence and determination. Evelyn, who was the top girl in her sub-county in KCPE and later emerged as the best girl in the 2022 KCSE exams, expressed her desire to use her education to make a difference in her community. “This opportunity should inspire us to do more for our country and people,” she remarked.

With this year’s intake, a total of 970 students have benefited from fully funded scholarships through the Equity Leaders Program since its inception. The program continues to be a catalyst for transformative change, equipping young minds with the leadership skills, knowledge, and networks essential to drive sustainable economic growth and social progress across Africa.
