In 2024, Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to lead Kenya’s digital transformation, announcing that it has surpassed 1,000 active 5G sites nationwide. With this expansion, Safaricom’s 5G network now reaches all 47 counties, extending its coverage to 14% of the Kenyan population.

The company now boasts 1,114 5G sites spanning 102 towns across the country. This expansion has enabled more individuals, businesses, and households to experience the transformative power of high-speed internet. The network’s growth is further reflected in the adoption rates, with over 11,000 enterprise customers and more than 780,000 active 5G smartphones now utilizing Safaricom’s 5G services. This increasing adoption underscores the technology’s impact on Kenya’s digital landscape.

“Safaricom is dedicated to driving Kenya’s digital transformation by providing a reliable, always-on network that ensures access to information, critical services, and communication, thereby bridging the digital divide,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom PLC. “We believe the benefits of 5G will be a key catalyst for innovations across various industries and will play a vital role in accelerating Kenya’s digital economy.”

Safaricom made history in October 2022 by becoming the first service provider to launch 5G in Kenya. Since then, the company has relentlessly expanded its 5G network, facilitating the digitization of enterprise solutions in areas such as IoT, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and payments. These advancements have optimized business operations, enhanced efficiency, and paved the way for innovation and scalability across the nation.

As Safaricom aims to become Africa’s leading purpose-driven technology company by 2030, the opportunities presented by next-generation technologies like 5G are becoming increasingly clear. From immersive experiences and gaming to smart warehousing, telemedicine, and smart irrigation, the possibilities are vast as Kenya continues to build its “Silicon Savanna.”

Safaricom has introduced tailored 5G data bundles and Wi-Fi packages to cater to the diverse needs of its customers and businesses.
