Kenya Power Urges Prepaid Customers to Update Meters Before August 31 Deadline to Avoid Service Disruption

Kenya Power's CEO Eng. Joseph Siror

Kenya Power has issued a critical reminder to its prepaid electricity customers to update their meter software before the fast-approaching deadline on August 31, 2024. The nationwide campaign, launched in mid-June 2024, aims to ensure all prepaid meters are updated to maintain uninterrupted access to electricity services. With just days remaining, Kenya Power has emphasized the importance of compliance, warning that meters not updated by the deadline will no longer accept electricity tokens.

Over 5.6 Million Meters Updated, But Thousands Still at Risk

As of August 21, 2024, more than 5.64 million prepaid meters across the country have already been updated. This significant number reflects a strong response to the campaign, but Kenya Power’s Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, has urged the remaining customers to act swiftly. “We have scheduled all prepaid meters for updates, and we urge the remaining customers to utilize the period before the deadline to avoid service disruption,” said Dr. Siror.

Simple Update Process at No Cost

Updating the meter is a straightforward process that customers can complete at no cost. Upon purchasing a unit of electricity, customers will receive two codes via SMS from Kenya Power: a Reset Code and an Update Code. These codes must be keyed into the meter following the instructions provided in the SMS. It is crucial that customers first load all previously purchased tokens before entering the update codes to ensure a smooth process.

Phased Approach to Minimize Disruption

Kenya Power has adopted a phased approach to this update exercise, scheduling meters in batches to avoid overloading the system with requests for update codes. This method has been effective in minimizing potential delays and ensuring customers can easily purchase tokens and access the necessary update codes.

Alternative Access to Update Codes

In addition to SMS notifications, customers can also retrieve their prepaid meter update codes through Kenya Power’s self-service platform by dialing *977#. This service acts as a backup for those who may lose the SMS notification or experience issues with receiving the codes.

Global Update Exercise for Enhanced Security

The meter update is part of a global initiative targeting all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a universal system ensuring the security of generated tokens. Failure to update by the deadline will render the meters unable to process electricity tokens, effectively cutting off the customer’s electricity supply until the update is completed.

Final Call to Action

Kenya Power’s leadership is urging all prepaid customers who have yet to update their meters to take immediate action. The company is keen to avoid any disruptions in service and is committed to supporting customers through the update process.

For more information on the update process, customers can visit Kenya Power’s official website, social media platforms, or contact the customer care team directly.

This urgent update is crucial for maintaining continuous electricity access, and with the deadline looming, Kenya Power is encouraging all customers to act promptly to ensure they remain connected.
