In a significant move aimed at expanding its footprint across the African continent, Qatar Airways Group has acquired a 25% stake in Southern Africa’s largest independent regional airline, Airlink. This development marks a pivotal step in the airline’s African growth strategy, enhancing the already established codeshare partnership between the two carriers.

Qatar Airways’ investment in Airlink, which operates flights to over 45 destinations across 15 African countries, underscores the airline’s commitment to Africa’s burgeoning aviation sector. The deal is not only expected to boost Qatar Airways’ network across Africa but also to solidify its role in driving the continent’s economic development through enhanced connectivity.

Speaking on the announcement, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, emphasized Africa’s importance to the airline’s long-term strategy. “Our investment in Airlink demonstrates our confidence in the African market and aligns with our vision to be a key player in the continent’s economic success. Airlink is a resilient and financially sound partner, and we are excited to help unlock the full potential of Africa’s aviation sector,” Al-Meer said.

For Airlink, the partnership represents a powerful endorsement of its business model. CEO Rodger Foster welcomed Qatar Airways’ equity stake, noting that the investment would enhance the airline’s operational scale, capacity, and market reach. “This transaction allows us to leverage the global scale and expertise of Qatar Airways, while reinforcing our own partnerships and expanding our network across Africa and beyond,” Foster said.

The collaboration between the two airlines will also extend to their loyalty programs, with Airlink’s Skybucks and Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club aligning to offer greater benefits to frequent flyers.

Qatar Airways currently serves 29 destinations across Africa, having rapidly expanded its presence since December 2020. With new routes added to cities like Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Harare, Kano, Luanda, Lusaka, and Port Harcourt, the airline has capitalized on growing demand for air travel across the continent. The acquisition of the Airlink stake is expected to enhance these efforts, fostering stronger economic ties between African nations and the broader global market.

This strategic investment by Qatar Airways further highlights the growing competition among international airlines for dominance in Africa’s lucrative aviation industry, as the continent’s economic potential continues to attract significant attention from global players.
