In an ambitious move to bolster vocational training in Kenya, the M-Pesa Foundation, in collaboration with the University of Embu, has launched a comprehensive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) scholarship program. This initiative is set to empower 1,300 youth from all 47 counties with skills that are critical in today’s job market.

The scholarships will fully cover program fees and provide a monthly stipend for accommodation and upkeep, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder the participants’ educational pursuits. The training encompasses a wide array of specialized programs, including craft certificates and diplomas in fields such as cosmetology, building and construction, mobile and electronic repairs, electrical installation, advanced welding, culinary arts, and information technology.

Nicholas Kamunyu, a trustee of the Safaricom Foundation, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with the University of Embu. “We are committed to providing accessible education and training to empower our youth for economic empowerment,” he stated.

In its first phase, the program will enroll 400 youth from 10 target counties, including Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Nakuru, Homa Bay, Nyamira, and Turkana. Applicants must be aged between 15 and 30 years, with application forms available online at the University of Embu’s website or at Safaricom Shops in the aforementioned counties. The deadline for applications is October 7, 2024.

Professor David Mugendi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Embu, highlighted the strategic selection of programs. “These scholarships provide access to a diverse range of programs tailored to meet current market demands. While these skills are often associated with blue-collar jobs, their value in driving industries and boosting productivity cannot be underestimated,” he explained.

Additionally, the M-Pesa Foundation has initiated construction and renovation projects to establish a TVET Centre of Excellence at the University of Embu. These developments will enhance the institution’s capacity to deliver quality vocational education and include facilities for various trades, including phone and computer repairs, an automotive workshop, and a cafeteria. The project also introduces an innovative Black Soldier Fly farming initiative, further diversifying the educational offerings.

This groundbreaking initiative promises to create pathways to meaningful employment for thousands of Kenyan youth, equipping them with the skills necessary to thrive in a competitive global economy.
