In response to a surge in motorcycle thefts affecting the livelihoods of boda boda riders in Lower Eastern Kenya, key stakeholders, including Watu Credit and the Boda Boda Association of Kenya (BAK), met in Kibwezi and Wote, Makueni County, to coordinate efforts to curb the menace.
The meeting took place following recent calls by BAK Chairperson Kevin Mubadi for increased intervention from security agencies to address the rampant thefts. These crimes have had a devastating impact on boda boda riders, many of whom rely on their motorcycles for daily income.
Collaborative Action to Enhance Safety
Speaking during the meeting, National Secretary General of the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya, Nehemiah Kinyua, emphasized the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to combating motorcycle thefts. “It is vital that we have this engagement with key stakeholders, including security officers, boda boda associations, and lenders, to find ways of eliminating instances of theft. What happened in Makindu recently should be a catalyst for action from everyone concerned,” he said.
Chris Rumenda, Head of Commercial at Watu Credit, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for continuous collaboration within the sector. “Our safety is a shared responsibility, and by joining forces, we can reshape this sector for the better. We are committed to continuous engagement, raising awareness on personal safety, and educating riders on theft prevention measures.”
Formation of a Multi-Stakeholder Alliance
The meeting culminated in the formation of a multi-stakeholder alliance aimed at tackling the rising motorcycle thefts. This alliance will oversee coordinated efforts between boda boda associations, Watu Credit, and relevant security organs to disrupt criminal networks responsible for the thefts.
The alliance’s objective is to strengthen security measures and develop long-term solutions to prevent further incidents. By bringing together various parties, the group seeks to create a safer environment for boda boda riders across the region.
Watu Credit’s Role in Empowering Boda Boda Riders
Watu Credit, a financial services company that offers flexible payment plans to motorbike buyers and boda boda riders, continues to play a pivotal role in empowering communities. By providing accessible financing options, the company enables riders to secure motorbikes for income generation while implementing enhanced security measures to safeguard their assets.
The partnership between Watu Credit and boda boda stakeholders highlights the importance of coordinated efforts to address the challenges facing the boda boda sector. As the alliance takes shape, there is optimism that these initiatives will result in a safer and more secure environment for boda boda riders in Lower Eastern Kenya.
