Southern Star Sacco, originally known as Meru South Farmers Cooperative Society, has grown significantly since its humble beginnings. It started as the union banking section of Meru South Cooperative Union Limited and was officially registered as a SACCO on June 6, 1994, under the Ministry of Co-operative Development and Marketing (CS No. 7178) with just two branches.
In 2010, Southern Star Sacco received its license from the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) as a deposit-taking Sacco. On January 7, 2014, it changed its name from Meru South Farmers Cooperative Society to Southern Star Sacco to reflect its broader scope and growing presence in the financial sector.
Today, Southern Star Sacco stands as one of the largest deposit-taking Saccos in Kenya, with an asset base of over Ksh. 1.53 billion. It offers a variety of savings and loan products designed to meet the financial needs of its members.
