Taifa Sacco, one of Kenya’s leading deposit-taking Saccos, has a rich history rooted in rural cooperative banking. The Sacco was initially established in January 1974 as the banking section of the Nyeri District Cooperative Union, serving farmers in Nyeri County. At the time, it aimed to provide accessible banking services to farmers who were part of the region’s cooperative societies.
By 1998, Taifa Sacco had grown significantly, expanding from 9,500 to 97,500 members. With such exponential growth, it became necessary to detach the Sacco’s banking section from the Nyeri District Cooperative Union, allowing it to focus on offering specialized banking services. As a result, the banking section was transformed into an independent rural savings and credit society on January 29th, 1998, and was rebranded as Nyeri Farmers Sacco Society.
In 2006, the Sacco underwent further rebranding and emerged as Taifa Sacco. Since then, the Sacco has consistently expanded its product offerings, target groups, and customer base, positioning itself as a key player in the Kenyan financial sector. With an asset base of Ksh 4.57 billion, Taifa Sacco is among the largest Saccos in Kenya today.
