Unison Sacco stands out as a prominent cooperative in Kenya, dedicated to empowering its members and supporting their wealth growth. Established in 1977 as Laikipia Teachers Sacco, it underwent rebranding in 2014 to better reflect its expanding membership and mission. From its humble beginnings with fewer than 100 members, Unison Sacco has grown exponentially, now boasting over 30,000 members and an impressive asset base of Ksh 6.79 billion. The Sacco is regulated as a deposit-taking institution by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority, in accordance with the Sacco Societies Act of 2008.

Membership Eligibility

Unison Sacco aims to attract a diverse membership base, drawing individuals from various sectors. To be eligible for membership, applicants must belong to one of the following categories:

  • Teachers Service Commission: Educators under the commission are encouraged to join.
  • Civil Servants: Government employees can also apply for membership.
  • Private Schools/Institutions: Personnel from private educational institutions are eligible.
  • Corporates: Employees and stakeholders from corporate organizations can become members.
  • Micro-Credit Groups: Individuals involved in micro-credit initiatives may apply.
  • Individual Business Entrepreneurs: Those who can demonstrate a capacity for regular contributions are also welcomed.

Membership Requirements

To become a member of Unison Sacco, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Field of Membership: Applicants must fall within the fields defined in the Sacco’s by-laws.
  2. Age: Individuals must be at least 18 years old.
  3. No Other Salary-Based Sacco Membership: Applicants should not currently be members of another salary-based Sacco in Kenya.
  4. No Detrimental Activities: Applicants must not be involved in money lending or other activities that conflict with the objectives of the Sacco.
  5. Good Character: Applicants should demonstrate good moral standing.
  6. Introduction by an Existing Member: A recommendation from a current member is required.
  7. Regular Income: Applicants must have a consistent source of income from employment, business, or trade.
  8. Entrance Fee and Shares: An entrance fee of Ksh 1,000 must be paid, along with the purchase of minimum shares.
  9. Personal Information Card: Completion of a personal information card and nomination of a beneficiary is mandatory.
  10. Membership Application Form: A completed application form must be submitted, accompanied by copies of the National ID or Passport and the KRA PIN certificate.
  11. Understanding of Society’s Objectives: Applicants should comprehend the objectives of the Sacco and their obligations as members as stipulated in the by-laws.

Rights of Members

Members of Unison Sacco enjoy various rights, which include:

  • Account Statements: Members can request statements detailing their credit and debit transactions, subject to a fee.
  • Participation in Elections: Members have the right to attend and participate in elections within their electoral zone.
  • Election to Office: Members can elect representatives or be elected as officers of the society, barring any legal or by-law restrictions.
  • Project Submissions: Members are encouraged to submit proposals for projects or initiatives to enhance the society’s services.
  • Nominee Appointment: Members have the right to appoint a nominee.
  • Sharing of Surpluses: Members participate in the distribution of the society’s surplus earnings.
