Association of Special Economic Zones (ASEZ) Launched to Boost Kenya’s Industrial Growth

Hon. Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, Principal Secretary, State Department for Investment Promotion (Standing) looks on as Dr. David Langat, Chairman of ASEZ and Solomon Mahinda, Vice Chairman of ASEZ sign an agreement during the launch of the Association of Special Economic Zones. The association aims to establish a strong mandate to drive the future of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Kenya and attract both local and foreign investment.

The Association of Special Economic Zones (ASEZ) was officially launched at Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel in Nairobi, marking a major milestone for Kenya’s industrial sector. ASEZ aims to enhance Special Economic Zones (SEZs), positioning Kenya as a top destination for both local and foreign investment, and driving economic growth and job creation.

The association brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including SEZ developers, operators, investors, and service providers, to advocate for better policies, streamline regulations, and improve infrastructure. The launch event was attended by industry leaders, government officials, and founding members such as Tatu City and Africa Economic Zones (AEZ). Key speakers included Hon. Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Investment Promotion, Dr. Kenneth Chelule, CEO of the SEZ Authority, and Florence Were, Acting Managing Director of KenInvest.

Dr. David Langat, Chairman of ASEZ, emphasized the vital role that SEZs play in Kenya’s manufacturing sector, calling it the “backbone” of the country’s industrial growth. He stated, “As the key driver of industrial growth, manufacturing within SEZs has a ripple effect across the economy, creating jobs for our youth and positioning Kenya as a regional powerhouse. Through ASEZ, we aim to strengthen this sector and build on its potential to deliver long-term, sustainable growth.”

Vice Chairman of ASEZ, Solomon Mahinda, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of SEZs in industrialization efforts, particularly in attracting investment and generating employment. “With ASEZ, we now have a unified voice to advocate for policies that will unlock the full potential of these zones,” Mahinda added.

The launch event also highlighted ASEZ’s commitment to advocacy, networking, and capacity building. ASEZ plans to connect SEZ developers and investors with global partners, offering tailored solutions to address challenges within the SEZ ecosystem. Members will also benefit from favorable investment support and close collaboration with government entities.

Hon. Abubakar Hassan Abubakar emphasized the critical role of SEZs in President Ruto’s vision for industrialization, job creation, and economic growth. He stated, “The launch of ASEZ is a major leap for our country. SEZs are a central pillar in the government’s economic agenda, and we see them as champions of Kenya’s journey towards becoming a globally competitive investment hub.”

ASEZ members, which include zone developers, operators, and service providers, will be required to meet licensing and approval standards within the SEZ framework. The growing membership reflects widespread support for ASEZ’s mission to shape the future of Kenya’s Special Economic Zones and further boost the country’s economic prospects.
