Huawei has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between governments, the private sector, and academia to accelerate innovation, promote economic growth, and create sustainable development solutions. This call for partnership was highlighted by Adam Lane, Director of Government Affairs and Policy at Huawei Kenya, during a roundtable on “Partnerships for Development Through Science Parks and Areas of Innovation.” The event took place on the sidelines of the 41st IASP World Conference from September 24-27, 2024, in Nairobi.
Lane underscored the pivotal role that partnerships play in leveraging advanced technologies to tackle pressing local, regional, and global challenges. He noted Huawei’s collaboration with Konza Technopolis and Machakos University as examples of impactful partnerships. Over the last five years, Huawei has provided infrastructure and training for Jitume Labs, while also funding research to enhance their efficiency. Huawei has supported IoT Lab initiatives and contributed to the Bachelors in IoT and Cloud Computing program at Machakos University. The company has also facilitated innovation competitions and hackathons in partnership with universities and TVETs across Kenya.
“Through these partnerships, we can unlock the full potential of digital transformation,” said Lane.
Leveraging Collective Expertise
Lane emphasized that partnerships between governments, businesses, and academic institutions create ecosystems where innovation can thrive. By working together, these stakeholders can address complex challenges in areas such as smart cities, connectivity, and digital inclusion.
Lane highlighted Huawei’s commitment to using technology for good, particularly through programs like AI for special needs. He noted that focusing on strengths and niche areas allows companies to make a greater impact.
“At Huawei, we believe that technology can be a force for good. We are committed to collaborating with governments, academia, and industry leaders to develop innovative solutions that address the unique needs of communities around us,” Lane added.
Huawei’s partnerships, especially in Konza and Machakos University, exemplify how collaboration can foster digital transformation and help drive sustainable innovation.
