Charles Kagimu and Monica Chelimo Triumph at Thrilling Jubilee Live Free Race 2024

Monica Jelimo crosses the finish line to be the overall women winner in the third edition of the Jubilee Live Free Race in Nairobi.

Charles Kagimu and Monica Chelimo were crowned champions in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, at the third edition of the Jubilee Live Free Race, held in the bustling streets of Nairobi on Sunday. This year’s event, which brought together over 2,000 cyclists from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Europe, and the United States, showcased a day of competitive spirit, fitness, and camaraderie in the heart of the city.

The Jubilee Live Free Race, a signature event powered by the Grand Nairobi Bike Race (GNBR), featured a variety of categories, including the iconic 60km Main Race, the 15km Family Fun Ride, the Kiddies Race, and the much-loved Black Mamba Category. Kennedy Ogada triumphed in the visually impaired category, while Gabriel Ambuko emerged victorious in the physically impaired category, adding to the day’s celebrations.

More than just a race, the event served as a powerful platform to raise awareness about the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across East Africa, such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. With cycling being a key pillar of active lifestyles, the Jubilee Live Free Race underscored the importance of regular physical activity in reducing the risk of NCDs, urging participants and spectators alike to embrace healthier living.

Jubilee Insurance’s ‘Live Free’ campaign took center stage at the race, connecting the dots between maintaining good health and making sound financial decisions. The campaign stresses the need for financial literacy and planning, particularly in managing future healthcare costs and ensuring access to quality care. Jubilee Holdings Chairman, Mr. Nizar Juma, echoed this sentiment during the award ceremony, emphasizing that financial well-being is intricately tied to overall health and security.

“Our state of financial well-being directly impacts our ability to lead healthy, secure lives,” said Mr. Juma. “Unfortunately, the lack of financial literacy prevents many from building the resilience needed for a stable future. While Jubilee Insurance has invested KES 60 million into this event over the last three years, our real investment is in our communities’ health, well-being, and future.”

The Jubilee Live Free Race also played a vital role in advocating for environmental conservation, a key message championed by Ms. Loise Wachira of the Grand Nairobi Bike Race. She highlighted the importance of non-motorized transport like cycling in reducing carbon emissions and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.

“Events like the Jubilee Live Free Race promote healthier lifestyles and encourage the adoption of non-motorized transport, which plays a significant role in cutting down carbon emissions. By embracing cycling, we are not only improving our personal health but also protecting our environment,” said Ms. Wachira.

As the race concluded, it left a lasting impact on all who participated, inspiring thousands to take charge of both their health and financial futures. The event exemplified the positive influence that sport, wellness, and responsible financial planning can have on individuals and communities alike.
