In a significant move aimed at improving the quality and traceability of sugar products in Kenya, the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has announced mandatory registration for all sugar packers in the country. This directive, set to take effect on October 10, 2024, requires all companies involved in sugar repackaging to submit their details for registration as part of efforts to monitor the quality of sugar on retail shelves.
The registration process stems from the provisions of the Crops Act No. 16 of 2013, which mandates that all packers meet stringent guidelines to ensure that sugar in the market is safe for consumers. The AFA seeks to enhance traceability through this new registration initiative, thereby safeguarding consumer health and promoting transparency across the supply chain.
As per the public notice issued by the AFA, sugar packers must fill out Form 9 (Application for Registration of Sugar Repackaging), which is available on the AFA website. This form, along with several key documents, must be submitted to the AFA Sugar Directorate.
Required Documentation for Registration Includes:
- Trademark Registration Certificate
- Sample of the Brand
- Certificate of Incorporation or Business Name
- Valid Tax Compliance Certificate
- ID or Passport of Directors
- Weight to be repackaged (in Kgs or grams)
- KeBS approval and compliance with other labeling requirements
Speaking on the matter, AFA’s Director General, Dr. Bruno Linyiru, emphasized the importance of this process in ensuring sugar packers adhere to the necessary standards set by Kenyan authorities. “This registration is critical in enhancing our ability to monitor the quality of sugar being packaged and sold to consumers. It’s also a move to improve accountability across the sugar supply chain,” Dr. Linyiru stated.
Failure to comply with these new regulations could result in penalties, including suspension or revocation of licenses for businesses involved in sugar repackaging.
The registration requirement signals Kenya’s commitment to improving food safety and quality, which has been a hot topic in recent years amid concerns over substandard products infiltrating the market. As the deadline approaches, sugar packers are urged to complete their registration by October 10, 2024, to avoid any business disruptions.
For further inquiries or guidance on the registration process, stakeholders can reach out to the AFA through their official channels, as outlined in the public notice.
