Del Monte Kenya Limited, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Murang’a County, hosted a highly successful free medical camp at Collage Primary School in the Murang’a South sub-county. The event provided a wide range of essential health services, benefiting over 1,000 residents from the local community.
The camp, held as part of Del Monte’s ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR), offered critical screenings for breast, prostate, and cervical cancers, in addition to other preventive and curative treatments. The initiative aimed to promote healthier living by encouraging good health-seeking behaviors through educational sessions focused on nutrition, mother and child health, and hygiene and sanitation. These sessions targeted women and adolescents, highlighting the importance of early health interventions and awareness.
Comprehensive Health Services Delivered to the Community
Working in close collaboration with notable partners such as JKUAT, Ganesh, NHIF, Minet Insurance, Shalina Health Care, Central Memorial Hospital, and many others, Del Monte ensured that the community had access to comprehensive healthcare services throughout the day. The camp kicked off at 7:00 a.m. with registration, followed by welcome remarks from Wayne Cook, Managing Director of Del Monte Kenya, and Isaac Mwoce, the Area Chief of Makuyu Location.
Health professionals offered a variety of services, including blood pressure checks, BMI measurements, blood sugar tests, deworming, consultations, and treatments. Special attention was given to screenings for breast cancer, marking WHO Breast Cancer Month, which takes place in October.
Wayne Cook expressed the company’s deep commitment to community welfare:
“Del Monte recognizes the centrality of communities to its operations, which is also underpinned within our CSR policy. This free medical camp is part of our continuous CSR strategy that aligns with our core values as a company that cares for its communities.”
He further added that the event aligned with Del Monte’s United Nations Foundation commitment, launched in 2020, which aims to empower at least 10,000 women with reproductive health information and services by 2024.
A Lifeline for Murang’a Residents
The medical camp addressed critical gaps in healthcare access for residents of Murang’a South sub-county, many of whom struggle with limited resources and inadequate health facilities. Isaac Mwoce, Area Chief of Makuyu Location, expressed his gratitude:
“We appreciate Del Monte for bringing these critical health services to the people of this area. The screening services and treatments being offered today will benefit our people, especially women and children, who are the most disadvantaged and are not able to easily access them due to poverty and limited health facilities.”
The camp was not just about treating illness but also about prevention and education. Health talks and counseling on lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension were key components, helping to equip the community with knowledge to make healthier life choices. ENT and ophthalmology services were also provided, ensuring that attendees had access to a wide range of care options.
Marking a Milestone in Del Monte’s CSR Strategy
Del Monte has been a longstanding supporter of healthcare initiatives in the Thika and Murang’a regions. Over the past few years, the company has sponsored similar medical camps in areas such as Ndula, Kandara, Matunda, Makenji, Swani, and Ng’araria, reaching over 3,000 people. This ongoing commitment to community health is part of a broader CSR strategy that focuses on improving access to essential health services for underserved populations.
The collaboration between Del Monte, the Ministry of Health, and other partners made this event a resounding success, offering critical healthcare services to a community that desperately needs them. The medical camp not only provided immediate health solutions but also encouraged long-term wellness through education and prevention.
A Healthier Future for Murang’a
Del Monte’s free medical camp represents the company’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of its neighboring communities.
