Stakeholders at the 9th edition of Securexpo East Africa 2024 have urged Kenyans to embrace innovation and technology as critical tools for enhancing online safety. This call comes in response to the increasing number of online users and Kenya’s rapid digital transformation, which has also led to a rise in cybersecurity threats.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the expo at Sarit Expo Centre, Thomas Bwaley, Director for Programmes & Standards at the ICT Authority, stressed the importance of public and private sector collaboration in adopting cutting-edge solutions to tackle the growing security challenges in both the digital and physical landscapes.

In his keynote speech, Bwaley highlighted the integral role that online security plays in Kenya’s digital journey. He pointed out that as more Kenyans gain access to the internet through initiatives like the 1,450 ICT hubs, 25,000 public hotspots, and 100,000 kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure, the country must focus on raising awareness about online safety to align with the goals of Vision 2030.

“The government has an ambitious plan to roll out 100,000 kilometers of fiber, develop 1,450 ICT hubs in all wards, and install 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country,” said Bwaley. “With this expansion, securing both the physical infrastructure and the users of these networks becomes critical.”

He also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in ensuring a safe digital environment: “In line with this year’s theme of Securexpo, we need to think about innovation for a secure future. Cybersecurity is no longer a luxury but a necessity. The security of our physical and digital environments is deeply intertwined.”

Angela Kinyua, Managing Director of Montgomery Group East Africa, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of this year’s expo in fostering partnerships and innovations that drive progress in the security sector. “This exhibition is more than just an event. It’s a powerful symbol of our commitment to progress, collaboration, and innovation,” said Kinyua.

During the opening ceremony, Kinyua presided over the presentation of the Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPAs), which honor excellence in the security industry. She acknowledged the achievements of Kenyan companies, noting their significant recognition for contributions to global security standards. “This year, Kenyan companies have made a significant mark by receiving accolades that underscore their contributions on a global scale,” she added.

The expo, which runs throughout the week, serves as a platform for sharing best practices and exploring the latest innovations in both physical and digital security. Participating companies include Security Systems, Securex, Two Way, Silvertech, Bistrol Distributions Systems, Draeger, Toshiba, Lady Askari, among others.

The event underscores the importance of collaboration in creating a safer and more secure future for East Africa by leveraging technological advancements and innovative approaches in both cybersecurity and physical security.
