Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB), a leading Pan-African financial institution focused on housing and urban infrastructure development, has been honored with the “Pan-African Development Bank Leadership Award – A Pioneer in Housing Finance.” The award, presented during the 40th Anniversary Gala of the African Union for Housing Finance (AUHF) and the International Secondary Mortgage Market Association (ISSMA), recognizes the bank’s critical role in advancing sustainable housing development across Africa.
Ambassador Sharon Trail, founder of AUHF, conferred the award to ShafDB. At the same event, she received a lifetime achievement award, marking over four decades of leadership in African housing finance.
Upon receiving the award, ShafDB’s Managing Director, Thierno-Habib Hann, expressed gratitude and highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts with governments, development financial institutions (DFIs), and private developers.
“This honor reflects our mission to transform Africa’s housing and urban landscape. Through partnerships, we aim to provide affordable housing and inclusive communities,” said Hann.
The award aligns with the transformative changes happening at ShafDB under its “New Dawn” strategy, which is redefining the bank’s priorities to meet the evolving needs of urban development across the continent.
Recently, ShafDB was appointed as the anchor resource mobilization partner during the African Union’s inaugural Africa Urban Forum. The resulting Addis Ababa Declaration cemented the bank’s role in driving urban infrastructure development, reinforcing its reputation as a critical player in Africa’s housing agenda.
Over the past 40 years, Shelter Afrique Development Bank has undertaken numerous housing projects in over 40 African countries. Its contributions include long-term financing, support for green building initiatives, and promotion of inclusive communities. ShafDB remains committed to developing sustainable housing solutions that address the growing urban challenges across the continent.
With a focus on scalable, inclusive, and impactful projects, the bank plans to expand its reach by leveraging its expertise in housing finance. Hann attributed the bank’s success to the dedication of its partners, clients, board members, and staff.
“We dedicate this award to the communities we serve and those who have supported us—our shareholders, partners, and bold staff members. It is through teamwork and passion that we will continue to make a lasting impact,” he added.
Shelter Afrique Development Bank’s recognition as a leader in housing finance underscores its vital role in shaping Africa’s urban and housing landscape. With its ongoing transformation and strengthened partnerships, ShafDB is poised to deliver more affordable, sustainable housing solutions that will drive future growth across the continent.
