KETRACO Completes Key Transmission Project

Ketraco station

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has energized the Sultan Hamud-Loitoktok 132kV transmission line, spanning 120km, along with associated substations. This project is expected to strengthen the power supply to towns like Merrueshi, Loitoktok, and neighboring areas in Kajiado and Makueni counties.

The development includes an extension of the existing Sultan Hamud 132/33kV substation in Makueni County and the establishment of a new 132/33kV substation in Loitoktok, Kajiado County.

According to KETRACO Managing Director, Dr. Eng. John Mativo, the previous 33kV line was not sufficient to meet the region’s energy needs. He emphasized that the project ensures a more reliable power supply to Kajiado County and supports future renewable energy projects like wind and solar, promoting a sustainable energy mix.

The transmission line is expected to stimulate economic activities by providing consistent electricity to businesses and industries. Key beneficiaries include the National Cement Company in Merrueshi and the Makueni Fruit Processing Plant. Additionally, reliable power will support the tourism sector around Amboseli National Park and improve agricultural operations in the region.

The enhanced energy infrastructure will also create employment opportunities and generate revenue for local economies, contributing to long-term development in Kajiado and Makueni counties.

The Sultan Hamud-Loitoktok transmission project is part of the Kenya Power Transmission Expansion Project (KPTEP). It is financed through a partnership between the EXIM Bank of China and the Government of Kenya, with China Aerospace Construction Group Ltd serving as the contractor.

The project began on May 22, 2019, and was initially set to be completed by October 31, 2023. However, delays pushed the completion date to August 31, 2024. The energization process involved the loading of two feeders, with Feeder 1 going live at 14:17 pm and Feeder 2 at 14:41 pm.

The new transmission line supports the government’s larger goal of increasing electricity access in rural areas from the current 4% to 40% by 2030. This project is one of several aimed at expanding the national grid, with plans for additional transmission lines and improved communication systems to enhance power management.

By improving power availability and supporting renewable energy development, the Sultan Hamud-Loitoktok project represents an essential step toward achieving sustainable economic growth and better living standards for local communities.
