Tatu City, Kenya’s first mixed-use Special Economic Zone (SEZ), has been appointed as the Regional Office and National Contact Point for the World Free Zones Organization. This prestigious appointment acknowledges Tatu City SEZ’s pioneering efforts in promoting SEZ development and driving economic transformation within East Africa and beyond.
This announcement was made during the 9th African Economic Zones Organization (AEZO) Annual Meeting, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi. The event, officiated by President William Ruto, convened over 400 global experts, policymakers, and business leaders to discuss the future of African SEZs.
Dr. Samir Hamrouni, CEO of the World Free Zones Organization, underscored Tatu City’s achievements during the signing ceremony.
“The selection of Tatu City as both the National Contact Point and Regional Office is a testament to its excellence as a Special Economic Zone. Tatu City has demonstrated the capacity to represent Kenya and the region effectively and support World Free Zones Organization’s global vision of fostering economic growth and innovation through free zones,” he stated.
Solomon Mahinda, Executive Vice President of Tatu City, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to fostering impactful investments and regional cooperation.
“We are deeply honoured by this appointment and excited to strengthen our collaboration with the World Free Zones Organization. As the National Contact Point and Regional Office, Tatu City will spearhead efforts to attract impactful investments, promote best practices, and enhance regional collaboration, driving sustainable economic growth in Kenya and across Africa,” Mahinda remarked.
As the National Contact Point, Tatu City will represent Kenya within the global free zones network. This role involves facilitating stakeholder cooperation, ensuring Kenyan SEZs align with international standards, and driving innovation.
As the Regional Office, Tatu City will:
- Expand Membership: Grow the presence of African SEZs within the World Free Zones Organization.
- Promote Regional Activities: Facilitate knowledge exchange, events, and partnerships across the continent.
- Elevate African SEZs Globally: Showcase Africa’s potential as an investment destination and align regional SEZ initiatives with global best practices.
This dual role cements Tatu City’s position as a leader in Africa’s SEZ ecosystem and strengthens Kenya’s influence in shaping the future of free zones worldwide.
Tatu City’s selection is no surprise, given its track record in SEZ innovation and governance. A founding member of the Association of Special Economic Zones (ASEZ) in Kenya, Tatu City is also an active participant in the Africa Economic Zones Organization (AEZO).
In 2023, Tatu City was appointed to the AEZO Steering Committee, further solidifying its leadership in the SEZ landscape. During the AEZO Gala Dinner Awards, Tatu City was recognized for its operational excellence and unwavering support for AEZO’s initiatives.
Tatu City exemplifies the transformative potential of SEZs in creating integrated, sustainable communities. Currently, the city is home to:
- 26,400 Residents: Working, living, and studying in a vibrant mixed-use environment.
- 88 Businesses: Including global investors and local enterprises.
Upon full completion, the city’s population is expected to grow to 250,000, with continued investment in infrastructure, housing, and business facilities.
One notable investor is Hewatele, a company building a KES 2.8 billion medical oxygen plant within the SEZ. The project has attracted funding from the U.S., Canadian, Finnish, and Danish governments, alongside the Soros Economic Development Fund. This underscores Tatu City’s appeal to diverse investors seeking impactful opportunities in Kenya.
Tatu City’s leadership in SEZ development aligns with Kenya’s broader economic vision. President William Ruto’s administration has emphasized SEZs as a cornerstone for creating jobs, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), and boosting industrialization.
This appointment also strengthens Kenya’s role as a regional economic hub. With Tatu City’s leadership, African SEZs can leverage shared knowledge, improved governance, and international partnerships to maximize their potential.
Tatu City’s new role as the Regional Office and National Contact Point for the World Free Zones Organization represents a significant milestone for Kenya. It not only underscores the city’s achievements in SEZ development but also positions it as a key player in driving economic transformation across Africa.
As Tatu City continues to attract investment, foster innovation, and promote sustainability, it serves as a blueprint for other African SEZs looking to enhance their global competitiveness.
