NBK Sponsors Special Olympics Kenya with Kshs1M for 2025 Winter Games

The National Bank of Kenya (NBK) has announced a Kshs1 million sponsorship for Special Olympics Kenya (SOK) ahead of the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games, set to take place in Turin, Italy, from March 7 to March 16, 2025.

The financial support will aid in the team’s preparations and travel, ensuring that Kenya’s athletes with intellectual disabilities have the resources needed to compete on the global stage. The upcoming Winter Games will see participation from over 1,500 athletes from more than 100 countries, making it the first edition since 2017.

NBK’s Commitment to Sports and Inclusion

NBK Managing Director George Odhiambo emphasized the bank’s commitment to sports and social empowerment, aligning with its broader sustainability goals.

“Sports plays a powerful unifying role, and we are honored to support our athletes with intellectual disabilities as they prepare to represent Kenya on the global stage. This sponsorship underscores our belief in the power of sports to drive positive social change and create opportunities for all,” said Odhiambo.

This sponsorship solidifies NBK’s role in championing inclusive sports and demonstrates its commitment to supporting marginalized communities through strategic partnerships.

Kenya’s Participation in the Special Olympics World Winter Games

Kenya’s Special Olympics team will depart for Turin on March 6, 2025, and is expected to return on March 17, 2025. They will compete in various winter sports, further establishing Kenya’s presence in global winter sporting events.

Special Olympics Kenya Board Treasurer Ms. Mugadi welcomed the sponsorship, recognizing its significance in ensuring that athletes are well-equipped for the competition.

“We are grateful for NBK’s support, which will go a long way in ensuring that our athletes are well-prepared to compete at the World Games level. This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration in creating an inclusive society where athletes with intellectual disabilities can thrive.”

A Growing Movement for Inclusion

Special Olympics Kenya is part of the larger Special Olympics movement, which operates in over 190 countries. Since its establishment in 1978, Special Olympics Kenya has provided year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The initiative is a critical step towards fostering inclusion and empowering differently-abled individuals through sports. NBK’s sponsorship will help ensure Kenya’s continued participation in global events, allowing the athletes to showcase their talents and inspire future generations.

Introducing Floorball: A Key Event for Team Kenya

One of the key events Kenya will participate in during the Winter Games is Floorball—a dynamic indoor sport that originated in Sweden in the 1970s. Floorball is similar to ice hockey but is played on a smaller court with five field players and a goalkeeper per team.

For Special Olympics competitions, the game is slightly modified:

  • Played 3 versus 3 with goalkeepers.
  • Smaller court size (20m x 12m).
  • Lightweight plastic sticks and ball are used.

Kenya’s involvement in Floorball highlights the country’s expanding footprint in winter sports, creating a pathway for future participation in global winter competitions.

The Impact of Corporate Sponsorship in Kenyan Sports

Corporate sponsorships play a vital role in enhancing Kenya’s sporting success on the international stage. Beyond just funding, corporate partners like NBK provide a platform for athletes to shine while promoting inclusive initiatives. The bank’s investment in Special Olympics Kenya will:

  • Enhance training and preparation for athletes.
  • Cover travel and accommodation costs for the team.
  • Boost awareness and visibility for inclusive sports in Kenya.
  • Encourage future investments in adaptive sports programs.

Kenya’s Growing Presence in Global Sporting Events

Kenya has long been recognized for its dominance in athletics, but recent efforts are expanding the country’s participation in non-traditional sports. Events like the Special Olympics World Winter Games provide an opportunity for Kenyan athletes to gain international exposure and inspire inclusivity in sports.

A Step Towards Inclusive Sports

NBK’s sponsorship of Special Olympics Kenya for the 2025 World Winter Games underscores the importance of corporate support in driving inclusive sports initiatives. As Team Kenya prepares for Turin, this partnership reflects a growing commitment to empowering differently-abled athletes and fostering an inclusive sports culture in Kenya.

As we celebrate this milestone, we encourage more corporate entities to invest in sports for social impact. Join the movement, support inclusive sports, and be part of the change!
