The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has initiated an investigation into Hon. Stellah Bonareri Nyaboke Atambo, the Chief Magistrate of Thika Law Courts, following multiple complaints alleging bribery. The complaints suggest that Magistrate Atambo, in collaboration with court clerk Patrick Njeri Muriithi, solicited and received bribes from accused individuals appearing before her court.
On March 13, 2025, EACC officers executed search warrants at the residences of both Magistrate Atambo and Clerk Muriithi. During the search at Magistrate Atambo’s residence, officials recovered KShs. 2,070,000 in cash concealed within a laptop bag. This sum is suspected to be proceeds from corrupt activities. Additionally, various documents pertinent to the investigation were seized. Both individuals were subsequently escorted to EACC Headquarters for interviews and to provide statements.
The EACC remains steadfast in its mission to eradicate corruption within public institutions. This investigation underscores the commission’s dedication to upholding integrity and accountability in Kenya’s judiciary system. By addressing such allegations, the EACC aims to reinforce public trust in legal and governmental institutions.
Allegations of corruption within the judiciary are particularly concerning, as they threaten the foundation of justice and the rule of law. The outcome of this investigation will be pivotal in determining the judiciary’s commitment to self-regulation and maintaining ethical standards. Should the allegations be substantiated, it could lead to significant reforms aimed at preventing future misconduct.
The Kenyan public has expressed heightened concern over corruption within the judiciary. Many citizens are calling for thorough investigations and appropriate actions to be taken against those found culpable. There is a growing demand for transparency and accountability to ensure that justice is administered fairly and without bias.
The investigation into Chief Magistrate Stellah Atambo serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges in combating corruption within public offices. The EACC’s proactive measures reflect a broader commitment to integrity and justice in Kenya. As the investigation unfolds, it is imperative for all stakeholders to support efforts that promote transparency and uphold the rule of law.
