The Kenyan government has disbursed KSh 3.52 billion for the April 2025 cycle of the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme, benefiting 1,760,510 individuals across the country. This initiative, managed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection through the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, aims to alleviate poverty and promote the well-being of society’s most vulnerable members, including older persons aged 70 and above, orphans and vulnerable children, and persons living with severe disabilities.
Each beneficiary receives a monthly stipend of KSh 2,000, which can be accessed via the e-Citizen platform by dialing *222# or by visiting the nearest M-Pesa agent. The transition from bank-based payments to mobile money platforms, implemented in January 2025, has streamlined the disbursement process, making it more accessible and efficient for recipients.
The government plans to expand the programme’s coverage to 2.5 million beneficiaries by 2027, with a projected increase in disbursements from the current KSh 3.52 billion to KSh 15 billion over the next three years. This expansion underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing social protection and ensuring that no one is left behind.
Beneficiaries who have not yet registered for mobile payments are encouraged to do so by obtaining a Safaricom SIM card and registering it with their national ID at any M-Pesa agent. The government assures that funds for those yet to transition to M-Pesa payments will remain secure for the next three months.
The Inua Jamii programme continues to play a pivotal role in Kenya’s social protection strategy, providing financial support to those in need and contributing to the country’s broader goals of poverty reduction and social inclusion.
