Safaricom PLC has publicly addressed claims by certain political leaders alleging the company’s involvement in the arrest of the late Albert Omondi Ojwang. The telecommunications giant categorically denied any participation in the events leading up to the arrest, emphasizing its commitment to data privacy and lawful operations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Safaricom extended its condolences to the family and friends of the late Albert, expressing sympathy and solidarity during this period of mourning.
Company Response to Allegations
The statement, signed by Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa, made the following key clarifications:
- No Contact with Authorities: Safaricom stated unequivocally that at no point did it engage or communicate with any security or investigative agency regarding the arrest of the late Albert Omondi Ojwang.
- Information Through Media: The company affirmed that it became aware of the arrest only through news reports, just like the general public.
- Concern Over Public Remarks: Safaricom expressed deep concern over remarks made by Hon. Justin Muturi, who is reported to have linked the company to the incident. The company rejected the assertions as unfounded and harmful.
In addressing the broader public, the company urged Kenyans to remain calm and not be swayed by inflammatory rhetoric. Safaricom called on all stakeholders to focus on pursuing justice through credible, transparent, and timely investigations.
“Our ask to all Kenyans is to ignore any attempts to incite them and remain firm in demanding accountability through transparent investigations,” the statement read.
The company reiterated the importance of due process and encouraged leaders to champion an impartial inquiry that would bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the case.
Safaricom also reaffirmed its strict adherence to data protection standards, assuring customers that their personal information remains safe. “We wish to reassure all Kenyans that they have always been safe and secure in how we handle their data, and we will continue to do so now and in the future,” said Dr. Ndegwa.
The statement comes amidst rising public concern following the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang.
Legal and political observers anticipate further developments in the case, particularly regarding how public figures and institutions handle sensitive allegations. Meanwhile, pressure is mounting for a full-scale, independent investigation to establish the facts and restore public trust.
