Britam Holdings Plc has officially launched a major sports development initiative, sponsoring four of Kenya’s leading professional golfers on their journey through the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) Equator Tour—a premier 11-leg tournament that doubles as a qualification path to international championships.
The sponsored golfers—Hesbon Kutwa, Kopan Timbe, Simon Ngige, and Simon Njogu—will receive full support from Britam through a KSh 3 million investment, marking one of the most significant corporate commitments to Kenyan golf in recent years.
“This is more than a sponsorship. It’s a strategic investment in Kenyan talent with an eye on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” said Tom Gitogo, Britam Group Managing Director and CEO, during the unveiling ceremony.
Britam’s holistic support package for the four golfers includes:
- 🏌️ Tournament entry fees across all 11 Equator Tour legs
- 🏋️♂️ Training and coaching resources to boost competitive readiness
- 🍽️ Nutrition plans tailored to athlete performance
- ✈️ Travel and accommodation support across all tournament stops
- 🧢 Golf equipment and gear
- 💰 Performance-based incentive plan
- 🛡️ Comprehensive golfers’ insurance
This all-encompassing support is designed to give the athletes the freedom to focus purely on improving their game and qualifying for top-tier global tournaments.
The PGK Equator Tour serves as the official calendar for Kenya’s professional golfers. With 11 tournaments scheduled, the tour will act as a gateway for the top 20 players to qualify for the prestigious 2026 Magical Kenya Open, part of the global DP World Tour.
The sponsorship deal was signed in the presence of:
- Tom Gitogo – Britam Group MD & CEO
- John Chege Wangai – PGK Chairman
- Robert Muthomi – PGK Chief Executive Officer
“We are proud to partner with Britam to raise the standards of professional golf in Kenya,” said Wangai. “With this support, our golfers can now focus on performing, growing their careers, and representing Kenya on the world stage.”
While the sponsorship boosts the players’ immediate prospects on the Equator Tour, its ultimate goal is securing Kenya’s representation in Olympic golf, a milestone the country has yet to achieve.
“We’re not just swinging for local victories—we’re building a national pathway to Olympic glory,” Gitogo emphasized.
Beyond the golf course, Britam sees this partnership as aligned with its broader mission to support Kenyan dreams through strategic talent development, insurance inclusion, and well-being enhancement.
- Hesbon Kutwa – One of Kenya’s most consistent players in recent PGK events
- Kopan Timbe – A rising star with international playing experience
- Simon Ngige – A PGK veteran with multiple wins under his belt
- Simon Njogu – Known for his powerful drives and clutch putting
With financial barriers removed, all four players are now well-positioned to focus on winning, climbing the rankings, and making a mark on global golf circuits.
Kenyan golf has traditionally struggled with limited funding, making it difficult for local players to compete internationally. Britam’s sponsorship represents a new chapter in:
- Sporting professionalism
- Private-sector involvement in national sports development
- Olympic-focused talent grooming
- Increased visibility for golf in Kenya
This model of full-package support could serve as a blueprint for other corporates interested in supporting niche but high-potential sports disciplines.
Britam has a long-standing history of supporting youth empowerment and financial wellness. This foray into sports sponsorship is part of a broader effort to uplift Kenyan professionals, both on and off the field.
“Golf teaches discipline, strategy, and consistency—values we share as a company,” said Gitogo. “We believe in growing together and teeing off toward a brighter future.”
