Fixo Partners with WTS to Launch Kenya’s First On-Demand Platform for Solar Installers

PARTNERSHIP: Levi Nyakundi (left), Chief Executive Officer for Fixo Solutions and Jose Rivera (right) General Manager for TMS Foundation formalize an agreement that will enable trained and certified solar installation technicians access employment opportunities through Fixo’s digital e-hailing platform. The platform, which was launched earlier this year, connects households and institutional clients to vetted and skilled handymen such as plumbers, painters, carpenters, electricians and welders. TMS Foundation runs training programes across East Africa, aimed at establishing a pool of trained professionals in renewable energy. The partnership with Fixo is expected to provide the newly trained technicians with a structured pathway to gainful employment. Looking on, are Julia Kwamboka, the Chief Growth Officer and Fixo Solutions and Wilson Maingi, the Program Manager at WTS Foundation.

Kenyan tech startup Fixo Solutions has partnered with Dutch-based WTS Foundation in a groundbreaking move to connect trained solar technicians with direct job opportunities across Kenya. The partnership integrates graduates from WTS Foundation’s solar training programs into the Fixo mobile platform, enabling them to access structured, formal employment in a sector that has largely been dominated by informal gigs.

This collaboration positions Fixo at the forefront of Kenya’s skilled labour-tech space, now expanding from general handyman services to include solar energy professionals. Since its launch earlier this year, Fixo has rapidly become a digital bridge linking homeowners and businesses with skilled service providers such as plumbers, electricians, and now, solar technicians.

“Our partnership with WTS Foundation is rooted in a shared mission—creating structure, visibility, and reliable income in an otherwise informal ecosystem,” said Levi Nyakundi, Founder and CEO of Fixo Solutions. “More than 80% of Kenya’s handymen currently find work through unregulated, word-of-mouth referrals. We’re changing that.”

WTS Foundation has so far trained over 250 solar technicians in Kenya, with a goal of reaching 640 engineering graduates from universities and TVET institutions across East Africa. Through this partnership, the newly certified professionals will be onboarded onto Fixo’s digital platform, where they can list their services, get verified, and receive real-time job bookings.

“This partnership is a game-changer,” said Jose Rivera, General Manager of WTS Foundation. “We’ve trained young Kenyans to meet the growing demand in renewable energy, and now they have a clear path to economic empowerment. This is the missing link between skills and the labour market.”

The WTS solar installation training program is accredited by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). Trainees complete the PV Solar Installation Trade Test, equipping them with practical skills in solar panel installation, electrical wiring, and appliance connectivity. Upon completion, technicians are eligible for licensing by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Kenya is aggressively pursuing its Vision 2030 goal of generating 100% of electricity from renewable energy sources. Solar energy is seen as a key pillar in achieving this ambition, but a critical bottleneck has been the shortage of skilled, certified technicians available on demand. The Fixo-WTS partnership addresses this gap, scaling up professional service availability for homes and businesses transitioning to clean energy.

“By digitizing the service chain and embedding certification into our platform, we not only make it easier for clients to find trusted technicians—we also empower professionals to grow sustainable careers,” said Nyakundi.

What the Partnership Offers: Key Highlights

  • Access to Jobs: 250+ WTS-certified solar technicians will join Fixo’s on-demand service platform.
  • Nationwide Reach: Customers across Kenya can now book verified solar installers directly through the Fixo app.
  • Industry Certification: All technicians have passed NITA PV Solar Installation Trade Tests and are EPRA license-eligible.
  • Inclusive Tech: Fixo offers a digital marketplace that promotes transparency, reviews, digital payments, and job tracking.
  • Upskilling Pathways: WTS aims to train 640 more technicians by the end of 2025, with future integration into Fixo planned.

The evolution of Fixo into a hybrid e-hailing platform for both handymen and green energy technicians underscores Kenya’s growing appetite for digitally-managed labour services. For homeowners, businesses, and developers alike, the integration of licensed solar professionals adds a layer of assurance and speed to solar adoption.

The platform also enables:

  • Booking and scheduling with certified pros
  • Cashless transactions and digital receipts
  • Rating and review systems for transparency
  • Remote job monitoring and reporting tools for property managers

As Kenya deepens its focus on climate-friendly energy systems and infrastructure, platforms like Fixo are becoming crucial enablers. For Fixo, the partnership with WTS is just the beginning.

“We want to grow with the green economy,” Nyakundi said. “By combining mobile tech with certified expertise, we’re laying the groundwork for a sustainable, scalable, and structured service economy in Kenya—and eventually, across Africa.”
