In a landmark step towards transforming correctional facilities into centres of dignity and rehabilitation, the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ), through its Nishkam Projects Kericho initiative, has funded and delivered a fully equipped modern kitchen and dining facility at Kericho Women’s Prison.

The facility was officially inaugurated by Mr. Patrick Aranduh, CBS, Commissioner General of Prisons, during his working tour of the Kericho Command. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Mata Baldev Kaur Ahluwalia, wife of Bhai Sahib Prof. Mohinder Singh Ahluwalia OBE KSG MGH, the Chairman of GNNSJ.

The new kitchen and dining hall are designed to improve nutrition, hygiene, and overall welfare for women inmates, creating a healthier and more rehabilitative environment. Speaking during the opening, Mr. Aranduh commended GNNSJ’s contribution and urged inmates to embrace government rehabilitation programs, register for the ongoing national ID issuance, and use the IDs to access health services.

“This modern kitchen is more than just bricks and equipment; it is a testament to what partnerships can achieve for dignity and reformation,” he said.

This humanitarian project was initiated by Bhai Sahib Prof. Mohinder Singh Ahluwalia, who has led GNNSJ with a philosophy rooted in nishkamtaselfless service.

“When we restore dignity, we sow the seeds of transformation. Our work in Kenya is not charity; it is shared humanity in action,” Bhai Sahib Ji stated.

Mata Baldev Kaur, who cut the ribbon for the facility, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the organisation’s compassion-driven approach:

“It is an honour and privilege to be here in Kericho, Kenya. The women here deserve the best — we all want safe, clean places to prepare food and eat. This facility will hopefully set a benchmark for other institutions across the country.”

The Kericho Women’s Prison kitchen project is part of GNNSJ’s broader vision to improve livelihoods and empower communities in Kenya. Other flagship initiatives include:

  • Nishkam Saint Puran Singh Institute (NSPSI), Kericho — Offers vocational and technical training for youth, blending education, spirituality, and heritage preservation.
  • Living with Hope Centre Vocational Training & Health Camps — Provides free medical outreach, including dental, eye, and general healthcare services to thousands of local residents.
  • Community Regeneration & Heritage Preservation — Protects and restores historical Sikh sites in Kenya, transforming them into centres of learning, unity, and service.

Bhai Sahib Prof. Mohinder Singh has earned global acclaim for his interfaith leadership and humanitarian work. His accolades include:

  • Order of the British Empire (OBE)
  • Papal Knighthood of St. Gregory the Great (KSG)
  • Order of the Golden Heart of the Republic of Kenya — Kenya’s highest civilian honour

Through GNNSJ, Bhai Sahib Ji has championed projects that align spiritual devotion with practical service, creating lasting impact across continents. In Kenya, his initiatives embody GNNSJ’s belief that dignity, education, and wellbeing are the foundations of rehabilitation and community resilience.
