Britam General Insurance has unveiled a dedicated Electric Vehicle (EV) insurance cover in Kenya, targeting owners of both fully electric and hybrid vehicles. The product is designed to support Kenya’s transition to green mobility while addressing the unique risks and challenges faced by EV owners.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s Draft National e-Mobility Policy, the Kenyan government aims for EVs to make up 5% of all new vehicle registrations by 2025. Britam’s new cover directly aligns with this goal by offering a tailored insurance solution that encourages EV adoption and supports the country’s low-carbon transition.
James Mbithi, CEO and Principal Officer of Britam General Insurance, emphasized the company’s vision:
“This EV Insurance cover shows how Britam innovates to meet evolving customer needs while supporting sustainable transport. By providing tailored EV insurance, we are contributing to a low-carbon future while helping the market scale responsibly.”
Britam’s EV insurance introduces several innovative features designed to address key concerns for electric and hybrid vehicle owners:
- Battery Protect Cover Extension — safeguards the EV’s most valuable components, including the battery and electric motor system.
- Personal Charging Equipment Coverage — protection for home or personal EV chargers.
- Out-of-Charge Recovery Service — towing assistance to the nearest charging station if a vehicle runs out of power.
- Flexible Payment Plans — customers can choose between lump-sum payments or monthly installments for greater affordability.
- Motorcycle Inclusion — extends to privately used electric motorcycles, broadening access to the cover.
In addition to EV-focused features, Britam’s policy also provides full motor insurance benefits under its standard terms, including:
- Accidental damage, theft, fire, and flooding
- Malicious damage coverage
- Political violence and terrorism cover
- Courtesy vehicles during repairs
- Road rescue services
- Excess protection options
Britam’s launch of the EV insurance cover complements its broader sustainability initiatives. At its Nairobi headquarters, the insurer has already installed:
- Three EV charging stations with six charging ports
- A 183-panel solar carport to support green energy integration
This positions Britam as a key player in Kenya’s transition to sustainable transport and the green economy.
