NSE in Talks with Teachers’ SACCOs on Listing Shares to Enhance Market Liquidity

NSE hosts board members from the Kenya Teachers Sacco Association (KETSA)

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) today hosted board members from the Kenya Teachers Sacco Association (KETSA) for a strategic meeting aimed at exploring potential collaboration to unlock new financial opportunities for SACCO members.

The discussions focused on identifying innovative ways for KETSA member SACCOs to trade their share capital on the NSE, a move expected to enhance liquidity and unlock greater value for millions of teachers and investors across the country.

SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations) have long played a central role in Kenya’s financial inclusion journey, mobilizing billions in savings and providing affordable credit to millions of members. However, limited liquidity in SACCO share capital has often posed challenges for members seeking to easily access or monetize their investments.

By enabling KETSA member SACCOs to trade shares through the NSE, this initiative could:

  • Enhance financial flexibility for SACCO members.
  • Unlock value tied up in share capital.
  • Increase investment opportunities for SACCOs and their members.
  • Deepen Kenya’s capital markets by integrating cooperative financing into the formal securities ecosystem.

Speaking during the meeting, NSE officials emphasized that the potential partnership with KETSA aligns with the Capital Markets Master Plan to broaden investment products and increase retail investor participation.

For KETSA, which represents thousands of teachers’ SACCOs across Kenya, the collaboration could empower members financially while strengthening SACCOs’ long-term sustainability.

The proposed framework would also create a transparent and regulated environment for SACCO share trading, boosting investor confidence and expanding opportunities for wealth creation.

The NSE and KETSA agreed to set up a joint technical working group to explore the operational, legal, and regulatory frameworks needed to make SACCO share trading a reality.

If successfully implemented, the partnership could pave the way for SACCOs nationwide to tap into Kenya’s capital markets while providing members with a more dynamic, liquid, and rewarding investment experience.
