The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has successfully attained the prestigious ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 Certification for Information Technology Service Management (ITSM), marking a major milestone in its digital transformation journey and commitment to operational and service excellence.

This global certification positions CBK among a select group of institutions worldwide that adhere to the highest international standards in IT service delivery, reinforcing its role as a leader in financial sector innovation, digital resilience, and customer-centric service management.

CBK’s certification journey began in March 2023, aligned with its 2021–2024 Strategic Plan, which placed operational efficiency at the core of its objectives. As the initiative progressed, it was seamlessly realigned with the 2024–2027 Strategic Framework, focusing on the pillar of service excellence.

The adoption of the ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 Standard supports CBK’s broader strategic priorities, including:

  • Digital Transformation → Leveraging technology to modernize financial services
  • Operational Resilience → Ensuring uninterrupted, secure, and efficient services
  • Sustainability and Innovation → Driving adaptive policies for long-term impact
  • Human Capital Development → Building a skilled workforce to power service excellence

“This certification represents our unwavering commitment to operational excellence and superior service delivery,” said a senior CBK spokesperson.
“By adopting internationally recognized ITSM best practices, we are ensuring that CBK remains agile, resilient, and future-ready while maintaining the trust of our stakeholders.”

The ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 Certification is a globally recognized standard awarded by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an independent body that develops and publishes international benchmarks.

For CBK, this certification means:

  • Enhanced Service Reliability → Structured IT processes ensure seamless banking operations
  • Improved Security & Risk Management → Reduced vulnerabilities across digital systems
  • Efficient Resource Utilization → Optimized IT frameworks for cost-effectiveness
  • Customer-Centric Excellence → Improved service quality for stakeholders and the public

By achieving this certification, CBK joins the ranks of globally compliant financial institutions, reinforcing its position as a technology-driven regulator capable of setting new standards in Kenya’s banking and financial ecosystem.

This milestone comes at a time when Kenya’s financial sector is rapidly digitizing, making cybersecurity, service reliability, and operational efficiency increasingly critical. The certification signals CBK’s proactive approach in strengthening digital infrastructure and customer trust as the regulator spearheads Kenya’s transition toward a cash-lite, tech-enabled economy.
