French Football Lands on SuperSport as CANAL+ Expands Sports Portfolio

PSG Players

SuperSport has expanded its football offering across Africa with the inclusion of Ligue 1 McDonald’s, following a strategic broadcast partnership between CANAL+ — now the owner of SuperSport — and France’s premier football league.

The new deal means DStv, DStv Stream, and GOtv subscribers can now enjoy up to three Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches every weekend, all broadcast in English on Your World of Champions.

Football fans got their first taste of the action on Friday, October 17, when UEFA Champions League title-holders Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) took on RC Strasbourg in an exciting debut match for African audiences under the new arrangement.

French Football Joins the SuperSport Line-Up

The partnership marks a major milestone for African football broadcasting, integrating one of Europe’s most exciting leagues into SuperSport’s already rich lineup, which includes the English Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, the UEFA Champions League, and CAF competitions.

Fans can now watch French giants PSG, Olympique Marseille, Olympique Lyonnais, AS Monaco, and others battle it out live every week, with commentary and coverage tailored for African viewers.

SuperSport’s Director of Sport Content for English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, Rendani Ramovha, said the collaboration represents a new chapter for the broadcaster under the CANAL+ umbrella.

“SuperSport is proud to add to its array of explosive football action and entertainment for our viewers across Africa, through the CANAL+ partnership with Ligue 1 McDonald’s,” said Ramovha. “We know how much football is loved across the continent, and broadcasting a prestigious league such as Ligue 1 only adds to the value that our subscribers receive.”

He added that the French league brings with it some of the most technically gifted players and rising global stars, including Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and teenage sensation Désiré Doué, whose performances continue to elevate the reputation of French football worldwide.

“The calibre of football talent now available on SuperSport speaks for itself, and we are thrilled to add the French League to our premium sports catalogue,” Ramovha said.

Expanding Access Through CANAL+

The broadcast development follows CANAL+’s acquisition of MultiChoice Group earlier this year, creating one of the largest integrated entertainment and sports platforms serving African audiences.

The move has enabled CANAL+ to leverage its European sports rights portfolio, which includes Ligue 1 McDonald’s, to enhance SuperSport’s local offerings. This integration ensures that African football fans can now access a wider range of global content without changing platforms or subscriptions.

Under the new deal, Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches will be broadcast across SuperSport Variety, SuperSport Africa, SuperSport Maximo, and GOtv Football channels, providing flexible viewing options for different audiences and subscription levels.

Africa’s Growing Appetite for Global Football

The inclusion of Ligue 1 McDonald’s on SuperSport reflects the platform’s recognition of Africa’s rapidly growing football audience and its passion for top-tier global leagues.

Ligue 1 has become an increasingly popular destination for African players, with many — such as Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Terem Moffi (Nigeria), and Moses Simon (Nigeria) — playing starring roles for their clubs. This strong African representation in France’s top flight is expected to draw significant regional viewership.

According to analysts, French football has long served as a bridge for African talent to Europe, with dozens of players from across the continent establishing themselves in Ligue 1 before moving to global powerhouses. The new broadcast deal ensures their stories can now be followed by fans back home.

Strategic Value for SuperSport and CANAL+

The addition of Ligue 1 McDonald’s also demonstrates CANAL+’s intent to harmonize its sports rights portfolio across continents. The French broadcaster holds the primary global rights to the league and is using its African assets — including SuperSport — to extend viewership and brand visibility.

By airing the matches in English, SuperSport ensures that millions of viewers across sub-Saharan Africa can engage with the content, while CANAL+ simultaneously expands its reach beyond its traditional Francophone markets.

The collaboration is also expected to open the door to more joint productions, multilingual commentary, and possibly localized content such as highlights, player features, and behind-the-scenes documentaries.

Building the Ultimate Home for Football

For MultiChoice Group and its subscribers, this development represents another major win. The addition of Ligue 1 McDonald’s to SuperSport cements its status as Africa’s premier sports destination, offering fans front-row access to the world’s top football action — all under one platform.

With major tournaments like the UEFA Champions League, English Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, and now Ligue 1 McDonald’s, African football enthusiasts have more choice than ever before.

As French football continues to produce some of the game’s brightest talents, SuperSport’s latest move ensures that viewers across the continent can follow the action live, week after week, in high definition and in English.
