Clinical Officer Wins KES 1 Million Tujiamini Gold Award to Build Maternity Wing in Konoin

Kipkoech Ruto and his wife receive the KES 1 million dummy cheque from Sportpesa Representatives at the Chemalal dispensary

Tujiamini by SportPesa has named Kipkoech Ruto, a Clinical Officer at Chemalal Dispensary in Konoin Constituency, as the Gold Community winner for 2025. He will receive KES 1 million to establish a maternity wing aimed at improving safe delivery services for mothers in the region.

Ruto, aged 33 and a father of three, applied for the award after seeing the call for entries online. His proposal highlighted a persistent healthcare challenge in Chemalal village, where expectant mothers often face life-threatening risks due to the lack of nearby medical facilities.

He noted that for years, women in the area have had to walk between five and ten kilometers to reach the nearest clinic. This distance has created serious dangers during labour, especially at night or in emergency situations when immediate care is required.

Ruto said the maternity wing will give mothers a safe and reliable place to deliver while enabling healthcare workers to provide proper care, manage complications early and reduce preventable deaths. He added that the facility will help lower maternal and neonatal mortality by eliminating the need for risky home deliveries.

For years, he has responded to urgent calls from families needing help during unsafe home deliveries. With the Tujiamini award, he plans to build a dedicated maternity facility within Chemalal Dispensary to offer delivery services, emergency care and postnatal support.

During the award handover, SportPesa Public Relations and Advertising Executive Deborah Maina commended Ruto for his commitment to improving community health. She said SportPesa is proud to support individuals who are driving change through the Tujiamini platform.

Maina highlighted that Ruto’s dedication to safer maternity care demonstrates how community-led projects can create lasting impact and transform healthcare access for families.

The Tujiamini platform continues to empower Kenyans who are improving their communities in areas such as health, education, innovation and sports. SportPesa has invested KES 30 million in this year’s initiative, which has so far reached more than 430 beneficiaries across the gold, silver and bronze award categories.

National applications for the next round of Tujiamini Awards are now open.
