Ruto awards Safaricom as Largest taxpayer

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) marked this year’s Taxpayers’ Day at State House Nairobi with a strong endorsement from President William Ruto, who praised the Authority’s deployment of artificial intelligence tools that are already reshaping revenue administration and boosting collections.

The President said AI-powered risk engines introduced by KRA have pushed Customs to its highest monthly revenue in history, hitting 85 billion shillings in the last month alone. Domestic VAT collections have also risen from an average of 20 billion shillings per month in 2021 and 2022 to 28 billion shillings today.

He emphasized that efficient tax collection directly strengthens Kenya’s sovereignty, noting that national revenue has grown from 122 billion shillings in 1995 to 2.57 trillion shillings in the 2024 and 2025 financial year. He added that Kenya remains on track toward the three trillion shilling target for the year.

Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, John Mbadi, said the government will continue modernizing the tax system using technology to seal leakages, expand the tax base, and ensure fairness for all contributors.

KRA Board Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi noted that the Authority is transitioning from an Authority to a Service under its Ninth Corporate Plan. Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga highlighted new citizen-friendly innovations including USSD tax filing via 2225# and WhatsApp-based support designed to reduce bureaucracy and increase access.

The event also featured the full list of 2025 KRA Taxpayers’ Day Award winners, celebrating compliant individuals, corporations, exporters, micro taxpayers, and public sector institutions who demonstrated exceptional commitment to tax responsibility.
