The State Department for Housing and Urban Development has completed and handed over key community facilities at the New Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate, marking major progress in the Affordable Housing Programme ahead of the upcoming occupation of 5,000 newly built units.
Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, who presided over the handover, said the development represents a shift in how government defines dignified living, ensuring communities have direct access to services that support a better quality of life.
Among the amenities now ready for public use are a fully equipped Early Childhood Development and Daycare Centre, a strip mall supporting small and medium businesses, a new outpatient healthcare centre, and a police post with a fire station to enhance safety and emergency response.
Hinga said the government’s intention is to provide not just housing but a self-sustaining neighbourhood where residents can live, work, shop, learn and access essential services without leaving the estate. He noted that this model aims to stimulate local economic activity while strengthening community cohesion.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo welcomed the inclusion of a security base at the heart of the estate. He said the police post will be adequately staffed and supported with surveillance technology including CCTV. He also highlighted ongoing collaboration with local leaders to ensure a secure environment for the growing settlement.
Allocation for the newly completed 5,000 studio units is currently underway, with thousands of future residents expected to move into the estate in the coming weeks. The development forms part of wider government efforts to increase access to decent, affordable housing across 111 constituencies nationwide.
Nairobi County Deputy Governor James Njoroge praised the design of the estate as a benchmark for modern urban development, stating that it reflects the vision of a community where residents are empowered and socially connected.
The New Boma Yangu Mukuru estate continues to evolve into a fully serviced urban community and a flagship demonstration of how integrated planning can uplift lives while expanding access to homeownership.
