Widespread Evening Blackout Hits North Rift, Nyanza and Western Regions

A major power disruption hit parts of the North Rift, South Nyanza and Western Kenya regions on Tuesday evening following a disturbance on the Kenya Uganda interconnected power network.

Kenya Power confirmed that the outage occurred at 7.14 p.m. and affected customers in several counties including Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru and parts of Nairobi such as Ridgeways and Kasarani. South Nyanza also experienced interruptions while the Central Rift region recorded scattered outages.

The utility company reported that electricity was restored to most of the affected areas within about 30 minutes. However Eldoret and several surrounding towns remained without supply hours later as emergency teams worked overnight to stabilise the network and restore full service.

Kenya Power issued an apology to customers experiencing prolonged outages and pledged to fast track the restoration efforts. The utility also encouraged customers to remain patient as engineers worked to isolate the disturbance and prevent further instability on the grid.

The affected regional corridor is served through the power link between Kenya and Uganda. Any disruption on that network can trigger voltage instability and ripple effects across neighbouring regions, especially during peak evening consumption hours.

The company said it is conducting system checks to prevent a repeat of the incident while maintaining stability on the interconnected grid.
