Kisumu Police Sergeant Arrested by EACC Over KSh 15,000 Bribe

Sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a police officer attached to Mamboleo Police Post in Kisumu for allegedly soliciting and receiving a KSh 15,000 bribe to block the prosecution of a suspect.

The officer, Sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor, was arrested on 28 January 2026 following an undercover operation conducted by EACC officers at the Winam Law Courts.

Alleged bribery linked to bhang possession case

According to EACC, investigations were launched after the Commission received a complaint that the officer was demanding a bribe from a member of the public whose relative had been arrested on allegations of possessing bhang.

Investigators established that on 23 January 2026, police officers from Mamboleo Police Post, accompanied by the area chief, raided the home of John Oluoch. Although no illegal drugs were recovered during the operation, Oluoch was arrested and booked at the police post.

Following the arrest, the complainant was referred to Sergeant Oduor, who allegedly demanded KSh 15,000 to ensure that Oluoch would not be taken to court.

Suspect allegedly detained while bribe was pursued

EACC further revealed that while in custody, Oluoch was allegedly allowed to contact relatives to raise the demanded bribe. During this period, he was moved between different police cells as officers awaited payment.

The Commission noted that Oluoch remained in custody for four days, despite the law requiring suspects to be presented before a court within 24 hours.

On 28 January, EACC officers arrested Sergeant Oduor as he allegedly received the bribe from the complainant.

Charges filed after arrest of officer

Following the arrest of the police officer, Oluoch was charged later the same day with possession of bhang. EACC noted that the charges were filed four days after his initial arrest, raising concerns about procedural violations.

Sergeant Oduor was booked at Railways and Ports Police Station, processed, and later released on bond pending completion of investigations.

EACC warning to public officers

The Commission cautioned public officers against engaging in corrupt practices and reiterated its commitment to eradicating bribery at public service delivery points.

“EACC remains committed to promoting integrity, accountability, and access to quality public services for all citizens,” the Commission said.
