In the fifth week of the ongoing Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa campaign, Safaricom PLC has awarded five new winners KES 1 million each. This brings the total number of weekly millionaires to 25 since the promotion began. Each winner also received an additional KES 250,000 to support a community project of their choice.

The award ceremony was held in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, where the latest winners were announced: Samuel Kuria from Nairobi, Emmanuel Mbogo from Murang’a, Kevin Bitienyi from Kakamega, Geoffrey Langat from Mulot, and Tabu Ndonya from Mariakani in Mombasa County.

Transformative Impact

During the ceremony, Tabu Ndonga, a 45-year-old mother of four from Mariakani, expressed her gratitude. She plans to use her winnings to support her family and start a small business. Additionally, she will contribute KES 250,000 to her local dispensary. “I believe this is a new beginning,” said Mrs. Ndonga, reflecting on the significant positive change this prize will bring to her life.

Emmanuel Mbogo, an 18-year-old from Murang’a, shared his excitement about returning to school to pursue plumbing, thanks to his winnings. He also intends to repay a loan his father took to fund his secondary education. “I never imagined I would win something that could transform my life and revive my shattered dreams,” said Mr. Mbogo.

Samuel Kuria, a part-time lecturer at a private university, plans to use his prize money to pursue a PhD and expand his poultry project. He will also donate KES 250,000 to the Home for the Elderly in Kasarani, Nairobi, where he previously volunteered. “This is a great initiative by Safaricom to support and transform Kenyans’ lives,” said Mr. Kuria.

Kevin Bitienyi, a 33-year-old casual worker from Kakamega County, is eager to start his own agricultural business. “I have worked as a casual laborer, but from today I will become self-employed,” he said, highlighting the transformative potential of his winnings.

Community Support and Future Plans

The five winners were selected after transacting on M-PESA and purchasing Safaricom’s Shine Kenya bundles. In addition to their individual prizes, they each received KES 250,000 from the Safaricom Foundation to support community initiatives.

Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom PLC, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting and empowering Kenyans through community-based projects. “We continue to support, transform, and empower Kenyans to have a tangible impact on society through our various campaigns,” said Mr. Ndegwa. He also announced that six more winners, including a grand prize winner of KES 5 million, will be revealed in the coming weeks.
