In a significant stride toward gender equity in the trades sector, seventy-eight young women from Nairobi and Kiambu Counties are poised to celebrate their graduation from a comprehensive plumbing and electrical skills training program. The ceremony, funded by the United States through PEPFAR and USAID, is scheduled for September 11th, 2024, at the Sportsview Hotel, Kasarani, from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
The graduates have completed a rigorous six-month course under the DREAMS program, a joint initiative by World Vision Kenya and the Family Group Foundation. This program is part of the broader USAID’s Tumikia Mtoto project, aimed at equipping young women aged 18-24 with marketable construction skills while also addressing their vulnerabilities to HIV, gender-based violence, and economic insecurity.
The graduation event will be graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Labour & Social Protection, Dr. Alfred Mutua, who will serve as the Chief Guest. His presence underscores the government’s support for innovative projects that integrate youth into the workforce through skilled training.
The organizers extend an invitation to the media and the public to join in celebrating this momentous occasion, which not only marks the culmination of hard work and dedication by the graduates but also signifies a step forward in the empowerment of women in traditionally male-dominated fields.
This graduation not only celebrates the achievements of these determined women but also casts a spotlight on the positive impacts of targeted skills training programs in transforming lives and enhancing community resilience. The event promises to be a showcase of inspiration and empowerment, reflecting the successful collaboration between local and international partners to foster sustainable development.
